Zachary Jackman Legislator Candidate
The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon Maine Alpha have a long proud history of campus leadership, from Senators to Student Body Presidents to Officers of almost every club on campus, but one brother has decided to step it up a notch. Brother Zachary Jackman, a Senior Political Science Major, has decided to run against Emily Cain for the Maine Legislature as the District 19 representative at the age of 20.
It has always been Jackman’s goal to go into politics, but his decision to start now came to him last year after running for Student Body President. Jackman decided to just keep the momentum going and use the last year of campaigning to his advantage. He hopes to use his position on the Maine Legislature to help shape Maine in a way that will give more opportunities for his younger brother than he saw for himself. Jackman wants to push laws and reforms that will promote business in Maine so that the youth of this great state don’t feel the need to go to Massachusetts or New Hampshire to pursue careers. He stated that Maine has everything that a person could possibly want, from the natural beauty, to great people, great community, and safety but just not enough jobs. That is what Jackman wants to change.
Jackman has been hard at work this semester balancing his campaign and classes with the help and support of his brothers, his roommates Joe Grace and Tim Woodman, and his good friend and President of the College Republicans, Ben Kelleher. He has been promoting hi name everywhere from posters around campus, to bumper stickers on cars, to his road side signs all over Orono, including his 8 foot masterpiece on Brother Brian Harris front lawn.
In a more active and personal approach, Jackman has been attending town meetings, college organization meetings, and going door to door to talk to the people about his views and to answer any questions they may have. The part Jackman likes most about campaigning isn’t getting his name out there but is talking about the importance of voting in general and getting citizens to register.
There are high hopes among Jackman and those campaigning for him. As a college student himself, he has been able to connect with the other students at UMaine who make up a significant portion of the District population. There has also been many people outside of the college who have expressed excitement that there are young adults who care enough about their town and state that they would run for the Legislature.
It has been a very exciting and eye opening semester for Jackman, and we wish him the best of luck at the polls and will support him in his endeavors.
