  • Zachary Jackman Legislator Candidate

The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon Maine Alpha have a long proud history of campus leadership, from Senators to Student Body Presidents to Officers of almost every club on campus, but one brother has decided to step it up a notch. Brother Zachary Jackman, a Senior Political Science Major, has decided to run against Emily Cain for the Maine Legislature as the District 19 representative at the age of 20.

It has always been Jackman’s goal to go into politics, but his decision to start now came to him last year after running for Student Body President. Jackman decided to just keep the momentum going and use the last year of campaigning to his advantage.  He hopes to use his position on the Maine Legislature to help shape Maine in a way that will give more opportunities for his younger brother than he saw for himself. Jackman wants to push laws and reforms that will promote business in Maine so that the youth of this great state don’t feel the need to go to Massachusetts or New Hampshire to pursue careers. He stated that Maine has everything that a person could possibly want, from the natural beauty, to great people, great community, and safety but just not enough jobs.  That is what Jackman wants to change.

Jackman has been hard at work this semester balancing his campaign and classes with the help and support of his brothers, his roommates Joe Grace and Tim Woodman, and his good friend and President of the College Republicans, Ben Kelleher. He has been promoting hi name everywhere from posters around campus, to bumper stickers on cars, to his road side signs all over Orono, including his 8 foot masterpiece on Brother Brian Harris front lawn.

In a more active and personal approach, Jackman has been attending town meetings, college organization meetings, and going door to door to talk to the people about his views and to answer any questions they may have.  The part Jackman likes most about campaigning isn’t getting his name out there but is talking about the importance of voting in general and getting citizens to register.

There are high hopes among Jackman and those campaigning for him. As a college student himself, he has been able to connect with the other students at UMaine who make up a significant portion of the District population. There has also been many people outside of the college who have expressed excitement that there are young adults who care enough about their town and state that they would run for the Legislature.

It has been a very exciting and eye opening semester for Jackman, and we wish him the best of luck at the polls and will support him in his endeavors.

    Brotherhood Retreat

The first weekend after classes began was a special one for the Brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon as they met for the annual Brotherhood Retreat. This year’s location was Brother Matt Dube's home in Solon, ME. The retreat kicked off on Friday night with a swim in the Kennebec River and ended with a rousing game of Words in a Bucket, a game that combines Taboo and Charades. With the majority of Brothers sleeping outside in tents, the night’s sleep was interrupted as Hurricane Bill decided to make an appearance and flood the tents. Needless to say, it was an exciting night.  The brother’s soon forgot about the night’s rain as Saturday cleared up and breakfast was served.  A team building paintball exercise followed breakfast, which, other than being an adrenaline rush, led to some nasty welts.  Once everyone was sufficiently covered in paint, mud, and sweat it was only logical that it was time for another swim. The evening consisted of the choosing of winners for the Balanced Man Scholarship, dinner, and another game of Words in a Bucket. Early Sunday morning, a group of brothers went on to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail at Pleasant Pond and were lucky enough to see a moose. All in all, the weekend was a success and everyone is looking forward to doing it again next year.

    Mr. Fraternity

On Wednesday, April 7th, Alpha Omicron Pi hosted their 8th annual Mr. Fraternity pageant.  There were many contestants, with most of the fraternities at the University of Maine being represented. Sigma Phi Epsilon had two contestants compete, Robert P. Collins and Dan Fournier. The competition consisted of a number of rounds, including swim-wear, a talent, questions, and formal attire. These rounds were judged by nine judges and monetary donations were taken for each contestant after each round. At the end of the pageant, all of the donations were counted and the judges votes were tallied, and Sigma Phi Epsilon's very own Dan Fournier was crowned this year's Mr. Fraternity! For his talent he performed a striptease to a song from the movie The Hangover, which was the theme of the pageant this year. His performance received over $370 in donations, which helped Alpha Omicron Pi raise more than $1,700 for Juvenile Arthritis research.

    Dates Dinner

Sig Ep brought back an old tradition this year: the Dates Dinner.  On February 10th brothers invited a date of their choice to the house, where they were served dinner and dessert.  Brothers volunteered to set up dinner and wait on the lovely couples for the evening.

  • Thanksgiving Dinner with Alpha Phi

On November 18th we had our annual Thankgiving Dinner Social with the sisters of Alpha Phi. As always, their sisters looked great, the food was excellent, and we even had some Merengue dance lessons prior to dinner.
